NRCS strives to improve, protect, and conserve natural resources on private lands through a cooperative partnership with local and state agencies. We provide leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, and related issues based on sound public policy, the best available science, and efficient management.

The Chippewa County Local Water Management Plan is administered by the Land and Resource Management Office. The Chippewa SWCD has adopted the Local Water Management Plan as its official Comprehensive Long Range Plan.

The MASWCD is a non-profit organization which exists to provide leadership and common voice for the Minnesota SWCD’s and to maintain a positive, results-oriented relationship with rule making agencies, partners, legislators; expanding education opportunities for the SWCD’s so they may carry out effective conservation programs.

The Minnesota BWSR is the state’s administrative agency for 91 soil and water conservation districts, 46 watershed districts, 23 metro-watershed management organizations, and 80 county water managers. The agency’s purpose, working through local government, is to protect and enhance the state’s soil and water resources by implementing the policy, comprehensive local water management, and the Wetland Conservation Act as it relates to the 41.7 million acres of private land in Minnesota.

The NACD is the nonprofit organization that represents America’s 3,000 conservation districts. NACD’s mission is to serve conservation districts by providing national leadership and a unified voice for natural resource conservation.

The Hawk Creek Watershed Project’s mission statement is to improve the water quality/quantity issues in the watershed while also promoting a healthy agricultural, industrial and recreational based economy for the region.

The Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment (Legacy Amendment) was voted into the Minnesota Constitution to: protect drinking water sources; to protect, enhance, and restore wetlands, prairies, forests, and fish, game, and wildlife habitat; to preserve arts and cultural heritage; to support parks and trails; and to protect, enhance, and restore lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater. The Hawk Creek Middle Minnesota Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan represents over two years of collaborative work between Chippewa, Kandiyohi, and Renville counties, along with each county’s respective Soil and Water Conservation District. The planning area encompasses five counties (Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Nicollet, Renville, and Sibley) and is nearly 1,262 square miles. With approval of the plan by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources, local government units that adopt the plan will meet minimum eligibility requirements for state funds for the implementation of projects and programs needed to achieve the restoration and protection goals included in the plan.

The Chippewa River Watershed is home to more than 42,000 people and is one of the largest watershed planning areas in the state. Its northern boundary begins with the headwaters of the Chippewa River, which flows south through several lakes, then joins the Minnesota River in Montevideo. This planning process and resulting plan brought together residents, local partners, state agencies, and local governments to develop a prioritized, targeted, and measurable plan to improve watershed resources.
